Clipchamp

Helping to envision, design and build an accessible video creation tool – from zero to one.

Clipchamp Create is an in-browser video creation and editing experience with a mission to empower anyone to tell stories worth sharing. Its vast library of filters, styles, transitions, and stock media combined with the power of a multi-track audio and video compositing editor gives everyone the fine control they need, and artistic help if they need it, to create exactly what they want, quickly and with confidence.

Small business owners, marketers, influencers, students, educators, families, and information workers of all types need the capability to make great videos with minimal effort. As a web app the product utilizes the users' own computer for localized process and asset management – resulting in a competitively faster experience over other cloud-first based in-browser video creation tools.

My Role

As product lead and designer, I worked with our multidisciplinary team to take the platform from concept to launch. This included conducting research, user interviews, high level product design, helping to oversee both active sprint planning and the longer term roadmap. This was in close collaboration with the co-founders,  engineers and other key stakeholders.

As a joint venture between Josephmark and Clipchamp, I had additional responsibilities including helping manage cross-group operations and comms, resourcing and expense reporting with our team's producer.

Product discovery and envisioning ("Recon")

Clipchamp found early success with it's novel, browser-based video compression tool which used their own proprietary patented algorithm that clearly outperformed competitors. The team however struggled to develop a substantial revenue strategy. With such a utilitarian product and sporadic use case for most, a recurring revenue model was out of reach due to high churn and low appeal for paid, premium features.

The Clipchamp founders came to Josephmark to explore the idea of a video editor product as a potential major pivot for the company. Over a series of weeks we worked with the team to help explore, define, validate and envision a path forward for the video editor idea. This engagement included customer and market research, stakeholder interviews, technical scoping and research, UX and UI exploration and envisioning. The outcome was a series of strategic and marketable materials that clearly defined the strategy forward and helped align wider stakeholders including current investors and board.

Building together as a joint venture

As a team of primarily ex-SAP senior engineers Clipchamp formed a joint-venture agreement with Josephmark to augment an embedded product/design team who could help build the video editor product with them through to its first publicly launched release and subsequent goal of raising a Series A round of funding.

Beyond sprint by sprint development, we were closely involved with key strategic initiatives including high level roadmap planning, pricing and growth strategies, hiring and brand positioning.

Phasing out

After almost a year of embedded involvement we began phasing out as we assisted with the hiring of own replacements. Since then, our General Manager and CEO have kept on as high level advisors.

Key takeaways
  • Building a deeper partnership: Helping manage a complex web of stakeholders and teams, including joint venture relationship between Josephmark and Clipchamp at higher level.
  • Design lead: Directly lead design team across following key areas: Core editor experience, User signup and project management, Resource management and integrated stock library experience, In-app Monetization , Enterprise/team features
  • "We don't think we want a classic editor": A key challenge in the early shaping phase was to determine the best approach to the product's core UX as a video creation tool. Structured and templated vs classic editor with full control.
  • Nurturing a pre-launch beta group: Learnt the value of nurturing a group of early stage prospective customers for user research, validation and testing. The group formed in the pre-release phase already spanned across our full spectrum of hypothesized segments (enterprise→student).
  • Not exactly starting from scratch: Beyond core product strategy and design I lead the strategy and implementation of the brand architecture, marketing website and cross-product marketing between the original utilities product and new video creation cool.
  • How much runway: Deeper learnings around dynamics and considerations of working on a venture-backed startup and how that impacted roadmap decisions, budgeting and burn rate.
